The Sono App Enables Car Owners to Share Their Vehicle Within a Trusted Community
By Expanding Its Sharing Service, Sono Motors Expects to Generate Overall Platform Service Revenue of €295 Million Euros by 2025
Vehicle Utilization Increases by up to 150 Percent Through Community Sharing, Eventually Leading to Fewer Cars on Our Roads
"The Ultimate Goal Is to Become the Largest Car Sharing Platform Without Owning a Single Vehicle." — Laurin Hahn, Sono Motors CEO & Co-Founder
9 September 2021 – The Munich-based mobility provider today announced the expansion of its community car sharing service beyond its SEV (solar electric vehicle), the Sion, to all vehicles. This service expansion aims to activate the potential of millions of cars that go unused every day. Sono Motors’ car sharing service is enabled by the Sono app, a custom-built platform that unites all of the company's digital services. The Sono app represents a key pillar of Sono Motors’ business model, and is expected to generate a platform service revenue of 295 million euros (348 million USD) by 2025.
Community Car Sharing Service
Sono Motors’ car sharing service firmly focuses on communities. Users share their vehicles exclusively with a selected group of people and, unlike other peer-to-peer sharing services, the service offers owners the comfort of knowing that their vehicle is in safe and trusted hands.
Extending the service beyond the Sion, Sono Motors utilizes the same digital capabilities set up by the in-house team for its SEV. The Sono app allows Sion owners to share their vehicle, a ride, or power with others. Regardless of manufacturer and motorization, the company now offers car sharing capabilities to everyone, including seamless payment processing, straightforward insurance coverage, and an optional telematics integration.
Sono’s community car sharing service is convenient to set up. Initially, physical key-handover for all car models will be supported via a seamless digital process within the Sono app. A fully digital, hardware-powered solution is soon to follow to make the process even more convenient.
"47 million vehicles in Germany stand around on the roads unused for 23 hours a day, taking up valuable space. We must start using cars more efficiently. In order to do this, we want to offer community car sharing beyond the Sion, with the ultimate goal to become the largest car sharing platform without owning a single vehicle," says Laurin Hahn, CEO and co-founder of Sono Motors. Johannes Bückle, Sono Digital Head of Product, adds “Building these sharing services within our Digital Group, we have been able to gain immense business and technology know-how making private car sharing easy and attractive for everyone.”
Community Car Sharing More Than Doubles Vehicle Utilization
As demonstrated by Sono’s pilot projects, adoption of community car sharing can increase vehicle utilization by as much as 150 percent, compared to usual car usage. It can also reduce car owners’ monthly costs by up to 85 percent. On average, 12 people share one car, which can significantly reduce the space needed for parking.
Sono Motors is currently expanding its service to selected car owners and their communities across Germany with the aim of gathering more data and customer feedback for incremental development of the service. In doing so, Sono takes an inclusive approach for its customers, regardless of locale and thereby makes the service ideal for both urban and rural areas. The company will continually expand the service and make the Sono app publicly available in 2022.
Once the Sion hits the streets, Sono Motors will provide, what will likely be, the largest fleet of shared vehicles in the world. This will help to facilitate real change in how we use resources by making car sharing available to the masses, as well as reducing the amount of vehicles on the streets.

Sono Motors is on a mission to enable a revolutionary mobility system, where every electric vehicle is solar, shared, and independent from fossil-fuels. Today, an experienced specialist team is developing a forward-looking electric car that is suitable for daily use, the Sion. Both the Sion’s integrated solar technology and innovative mobility services will enable users to access clean mobility, harness solar energy and reduce CO2 impacts.
Sono Motors was founded in 2016 and has rapidly grown to more than 200 employees today. The team combines a range of burgeoning global talent with industry veterans, including former employees from BMW, Nissan, Chrysler, Daimler, Audi, Mozilla, Sixt, FlixBus and mytaxi. Since its foundation, the company has raised approximately €100 million through reservations and funding. The company released its first generation Sion prototype in 2017 and has amassed 14,000 reservations with advance payments. In 2018, Sono Motors was recognized as a Solar Impulse Efficient Solution by the Solar Impulse Foundation. In January of 2020, Sono Motors successfully closed one of the largest community crowdfunding campaigns in Europe.
Sono Motors’ Sion intends to blend disruptive technology with affordability to enable individual contribution to global sustainability. The Sono solar technology replaces traditional paint with proprietary integrated solar panels that can form to various applications. Additionally, the Sion’s solar panels can add 112 km or 70 mi on average (up to 245 km or 152 mi) of additional driving range per week to the car’s battery. The Sion is expected to have the lowest TCO (total cost of ownership) in its category at the start of production, which is scheduled for the first half of 2023.
