Sono Motors equips solar car Sion with new LED headlamp technology

Joint development of a fuel-efficient LED headlamp concept for solar car Sion in cooperation with Automotive Solutions Germany.

Munich (Germany), June 6, 2018 – Today, the mobility provider Sono Motors announced its cooperation with Automotive Solutions Germany GmbH (ASG), a specialist in the development of automotive lighting systems.

The electric car Sion developed by Sono Motors, which generates additional range from solar energy via solar modules integrated into the body, will be equipped with particularly low-consumption LED headlamps by ASG for the start of series production in 2019.

A team from both companies is developing a tailor-made concept for headlamps, rear and brake lights using LED technology that precisely meets the vehicle's sustainable requirements. The advantages of the efficient and long-lasting LED technology are combined with those of existing and cost-efficient reflector lighting systems.

The contract has a total volume of several million euros and a term of eight years. The decision to install high-quality LED headlamps in a vehicle in the price class of 16,000 euros, which one Sion costs excluding the battery, is a novelty in the automotive industry:

"Standard equipment with LED technology in this price segment is still unusual. We are therefore delighted to break new ground in this area and take on a pioneering role," explains Jona Christians, Managing Director of Sono Motors.

"We are convinced that in ASG we have found a suitable partner with the experience, the unique competence, but above all the necessary agility, which is required for our tight development plan up to the start of series production.

Sono Motors presented the innovative, family-friendly Sion to a broad international public for the first time in the summer of 2017. Since then, the young company has organized test drives in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland to give an interested audience the opportunity to find out about the design, equipment and driving characteristics of the Sion.

The electric car has a range of 255 kilometers according to WLTP standard and feeds solar energy into the battery for up to 30 kilometers of range every day, using solar cells, which are integrated into the body.

The vehicle can either be charged at a conventional socket, using a type 2 connector, or within 30 minutes at a quick charging station. As of today, Sono Motors has over 4,500 vehicle reservations.
