Frequently Asked Questions

Sion

General

What is the Sion?

The Sion is a self-charging electric car. Integrated photovoltaic panels are charging the battery during the day, which makes the car a mobile power station.

The roof, bonnet, rear and the complete bodywork of the car consist of highly efficient mono crystalline silicon cells, which are covered by polycarbonate. We call this system viSono. Inside the car, a natural air filter made out of moss called breSono. It regulates the humidity and filters fine dust particles.

The electrically powered family car with five doors and 4.10 m in length is equipped with five seats (2 + 3). An 80 kW motor allows a maximum speed of up to 140 kph. An optional trailer hitch permits a tensile load of 750 kg.
The Sion has a range of 250 km under everyday conditions.

The integrated charger allows you to charge batteries with power between 3,7 and 11 kW AC (22 kW is being sought) and 50 kW DC through a CCS charger. With a charging power of 50 kW, the batteries can be charged up to 80 % in 30 minutes. Therefore it is possible to charge the car with an average household plug.

Thanks to the function of bidirectional charging – biSono – you can also draw energy from the Sion and power your devices wherever you are. As a matter of fact, you can also charge other electric vehicles.

Is the prototype similar to the final vehicle?

The current version of the vehicle is a so-called close-to-production-prototype. This means the vehicle design, shape, form, operation and finishing are very close to the final vehicle version that will be delivered from 2019. Nevertheless, design, interior and finishing will still be optimised during final vehicle development, i.e. changes/improvements can still be expected.

Will there be a right-hand-drive-version?

During the first production cycle, there most likely only be a left-hand-drive-version. However, depending on demand for RHD vehicles and the success of the Sion, we will consider deploying a RHD version of the Sion.

How much does the Sion weigh?

The Sion, including battery, is expected to weigh 1.4-1.6 tons. We are going to communicate final data over the development for the volume production.

What is the maximal trailing load of the Sion?

The trailing load of the Sion depends on the total weight of the vehicle. For this reason, from today’s point of view, we can not make a final statement about the trailing load.
Of course, we are working on a higher load for the Sion, but we do not want to promise anything that we can not keep. That is why we specify 750kg of trailing load.

In which colours will the Sion be offered?

We are currently planning a one-product strategy for the volume production. I.e. the Sion is expected to be produced only in one color (black or white). We present the prototype in these two colors to show you both options.

Powertrain

Is there an option for AWD?

We are currently not planning to offer the all-wheel-drive option for the Sion. Nevertheless, we will make the final decisions about the offered configuration during the concept phase for volume production.

What kind of drive does the Sion have? Front drive, rear wheel drive?

The Sion will be offered with a rear wheel drive.

Can you drive with the Sion "Off-Road"? What is the ground clearance?

The Sion is first and foremost an e-car designed for everyday urban needs. At the very least, the Sion with its 80 kW engine should bring a certain performance to the ground, in order to be able to master also stronger slopes, as well as worse road conditions.
We will communicate the final ground clearance during serial production.

Battery

Will the Sion be offered with a bigger battery?

WIth the Sion we follow a one-product strategy. I.e. we will also offer only one battery. The current development plans with a battery with a capacity of 35-45 kWh and thus a real range of 250 km per charge.

Are the 250km NEDC range?

No. This is the real range, which we will definitely ensure under normal conditions.

Will it be possible to integrate a Range Extender?

No, currently such a possibility is not being considered. We are going to make a final decision on this during the design phase to volume production.

Charging

Which connectors does the Sion have?

  • Sion will support the following connector types
CCS for quick charge 50 kW (DC)
Type2 (EN 62196) 11 kW (AC), output (bidirectional) 6.6 kW (AC)
    Household plug 2.6 kW (AC)

Which charging adapters are included?

The Sion is supplied with a Typ 2 plug and a CCS plug system. The Typ 2 charging cable is expected to be available for an extra charge. The CCS charging cable is generally integrated into the fast-charging stations.

How long does it take to charge the Sion?

The Sion can be charged with three different charging methods:
1. At the household socket: Here the charge takes up to 13 hours depending on how strong the socket is, in order to fully fill a completely empty battery.
2. At a charging station: Here the charge for 80% takes 2,5h and 3,5h for 100%
3. At a quick-charging station: Here the Sion is recharged to 80% in 30 min. 80% and thus 200km range are often enough to get to the next quick-charging station safely.

Is it possible to charge the Sion at any household socket?

Yes, you can charge the Sion at each household socket with the appropriate charging adapter. However, we recommend installing a charging station (wallbox) to charge the car. This charging station is adapted to the charging capacity of your electrical installation and communicates to your Sion, which maximum current can be charged.

Can I charge the Sion also with a type 1 (SAE J1772) plug?

Sion will support the following connector types: CCS, Type2 (EN 62196) and the household plug. In order to charge the Sion with your existing SAE J1772 plug you are going to need an adapter. We will not deliver the adapter, but this is freely available in many shops and online.

biSono

What is biSono?

Thanks to the technology of bidirectional charging the Sion can not only generate but also provide energy. This feature turns the car into a mobile power station – also for other electric vehicles.
The outlet is accessible from the outside and is placed underneath the cap at the front. In order to access the outlet, the cap needs to be unlocked. This prevents unintended access.

Using a household plug, all common electronic devices with up to 2,700 W can be powered by the Sion. You can plug in your electronic devices and power them with the Sions battery. But that’s not at all.

Through the fast-charging plug, it is possible to go up to 22 kW. In many areas, electricity is being generated with the help of generators when there is no power supply nearby.

Usually, those are inefficient stroke generators, which are not subject to emission regulations. The Sion makes it possible to replace generators on construction sites, at events and during a situation of emergency. Mobile energy that is being generated eco-friendly – that’s the idea behind viSono and the bidirectional charging system.

How many days can the Sion provide electricity for a household?

Assuming a household consumption of 5 kWh per day and a battery size of 35 kWh, the energy of the Sion is enough to supply the household with electricity for 7 days.

Can the Sion supply a household with electricity?

Yes, from a technical point of view, by integrating the biSono system into the Sion, it can supply a household with electricity. However, there are legal restrictions on which we have no influence.

viSono

What is viSono?

viSono is based on the idea of “energy harvesting”. Through the power of the sun, the battery recharges itself. Thereby the Sion can cover up to 30 kilometers per day – for free.
The integrated solar cells enable the Sion to go without recharging for several days. A total of 330 SunPower cells are producing 1,208 W peak at an efficiency of 24 %.

This amount could provide power for up to 40 km in one day. However, this is a theoretical maximum value which is highly unlikely to be achieved under real-life circumstances.
For the solar panels, we use monocrystalline silicon cells. The modular units are pasted on a substructure, similar to the assemblage of a conventional windshield. Thereby the modular units can simply be exchanged.

The selection of the best material has the highest priority. The components have to meet the following requirements: a service life of at least eight years, resistance against harmful environmental influences like ultraviolet rays and water, break resistance and a low weight.

Usually, solar cells are laminated on top of 2 to 5 mm of glass. However, by comparison, glass has a higher weight and is less break resistible.

For viSono we, therefore, use polycarbonate as support material. It is light, considerably more shatterproof and has a transparency index of .86 (glass: .8 to .9).

Does the pv-module have to be replaced even in case of a light crash?

First and foremost here does not count the damage to the polycarbonate but the damage to a solar cell itself. The damaged module should be checked for its functionality and replaced if necessary.

breSono

What is breSono?

Integrating one artificial filter was not enough for us. So we developed the breSono system. Besides the artificial air filter, we integrated moss into the dashboard and the center console.
It serves as a natural air filter, which further improves the indoor air quality and has positive effects on the humidity inside the car. Fine dust particles are first filtered by the artificial system and additionally cleaned by the breSono system.

Exclusive tests concerning its efficiency have shown that the moss filters 20 % of fine dust particles.

The system requires no care. Watering, fertilizing, trimming or exposure to natural light are not necessary because the moss has no enzymatic reactions in this state. Even during hot summer days it doesn’t need any maintenance and is very durable.

When exchanging the artificial filter, you can easily exchange the moss too.

We used the moss for several years without any noticeable change. It has a high color consistency and therefore keeps its exclusive natural look over many years.

In a special dyeing process, the micro structures which take water out of the air and release it when needed, are preserved, along with the other natural functions of the moss. In addition, this process protects the moss from staining from environmental influences, such as mold and pests.

breSono has the characteristic of a sponge and thus acts humidity-regulating. Humidity is either bound or released into the air depending on the level. At more than 50 %, the moss binds humidity and becomes soft.

At lower humidities, the moss releases the stored moisture and thereby becomes dry and somewhat harder. Both are natural states of the moss which do not alter its appearance.

Is the moss alive and do I have to exchange it?

No, the moss is no longer alive in this treated form. Nevertheless, it retains its positive properties, fine dust filtration as well as the regulation of humidity.
It is connected downstream of a commercially available air filter and should be replaced at the same time as this one.

Do I have to pour the moss?

The moss must not be poured in this state since it loses all enzymatic activity with the harvest. Nevertheless, it retains its positive properties, fine dust filtration as well as the regulation of humidity.

Interior

How spacious is the luggage compartment?

The Sion will be equipped and offered with a family-friendly luggage compartment that features a volume of 650 Litres. Through the foldable back seats, the volume can be expanded to 1,250 Litres.

Will be car be suitable for tall people? Will the driver seat be height adjustable?

Yes, the driver seat hight and position will be adjustable. The ergonomic design will be pursuant to the standards in the automotive industry, i.e. 95 Percentile Person.

Is the seating of the prototype the same as the final version?

The current version of the vehicle is a so-called close-to-production-prototype. This means the vehicle design, shape, form, operation and finishing are very close to the final vehicle version. Nevertheless, design, interior and finishing will still be optimised during final vehicle development, i.e. changes/improvements can still be expected, foremost, for the seating-concept.

Is it possible to install three child seats in the back?

Suitable posture devices for child seats are planned (Isofix). The number of child seats is dependent on the size of the child seats.

Can I fold the rear seats indiviually?

Yes, you will be able to fold the seats individually. We will make a final decision during the development phase for volume production.

Will it be possible to install seats in the trunk?

Currently, the Sion will be offered as a 5-seater. We will make a final decision during the development phase for volume production.

CO2-offsets

What are CO2-emissions and how are they related to climate change?

Large parts of the sun’s heat rays, that reach planet earth, are absorbed by its surface. The remaining heat is emitted back into space. Greenhouse gases like CO2 impede the heat’s escape. This naturally occuring process is called the greenhouse effect.

CO2 is caused by human activities e.g. airplane travel, driving internal combustion engine cars, the production of goods or burning fossil fuels to generate energy.

The increase of the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is caused by such activities, reinforces the natural greenhouse effect and results in global warming. CO2 is particularly important in this context, since it makes up the lion’s share of human-made greenhouse gas emissions.

What does offsetting CO2 mean?

CO2-offsets are a means of global climate protection: the emission of a certain amount of CO2 in one place on earth, is prevented in another, since the location, where emissions are caused or prevented, is irrelevant to the earth’s atmosphere. After mitigation and reduction, offsetting CO2-emissions is an effective measure to counteract global warming.

How do CO2-offsets work?

CO2 is offset by developing and expanding renewable energy generation and energy efficiency technology, that reduces or prevents the emission of greenhouse gases, in developing and emerging countries. Individuals or organisations, that want to offset their CO2-emissions, measure these and purchase CO2-certificates (CERs – certified emission reduction) from offset providers, climate protection project operators or certificate traders. One certificate represents a certain amount of CO2 (usually one ton), that is measurably saved by a climate protection project. The advantage of this procedure is the prevention of emissions in the Global South, where it is economically best. It has to be ensured, that the emission reduction is permanent and that the project can only move forward due to the additional financing by the offsetting mechanism. In other words, the project would not have been viable without the sale of the certificates and hence, would not have been implemented. The technical term for this key criterion is “additionality” of the emission reduction.

What standards for certifying climate protection projects exist?

There is a variety of standards for certifying climate protection projects. They vary in their requirements for the project’s quality as well as its local social and environmental impacts. A project can only be registered for certification, if it is scientifically proven, that the project will save CO2-emissions. Third-party institutions audit and certify these savings. Beyond the climate protection effect, projects need to fullfill criteria regarding duration and social aspects. High-grade climate protection projects are characterized by positive impacts on the local population and region. Examples are access to clean energy, an increase in household income or an improvement in the local population’s health. The most wide-spread certification standards are the “Verified Carbon Standard” (VCS), the “Gold Standard”, as well as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which was established by the United Nations (UN). The Gold Standard is classified as the most rigorous certification standard contentwise. Besides the project’s additionality, projects certified under the Gold Standard are supposed to ensure sustainable development in their respective country. The CDM on the other hand, emphasizes the quality and transparency of the processes for registration and implementation of a project. As a rule, a combination of these two standards maximises the quality of a project content-wise and on an organizational level.

What about Sono Motors' dedication to climate protection?

In June 2017 we decided to offset all emissions caused along the supply chain of the Sion’s production. We are currently in the process of systematically measuring these. In addition to the production of all parts, their assembly and logistics, this also includes our office’s emissions and business travel. As soon as we are done measuring, we (in collaboration with a partner) will make a final decision regarding climate protection projects for offsetting these emissions. We aspire to choose projects that meet the highest quality standards and have as big of a positive social and environmemtal impact locally as possible. This will not cause additional costs for our community. In line with our self-perception and our goal to protect the climate the cost for the CO2-offset is included in the purchase price of the Sion.

Services

goSono

What is goSono?

goSono combines three remarkable features of the Sion: power sharing, ride sharing, and car sharing. By using your smartphone you can share your energy, rides, or the Sion.

carSharing

The Sono-App makes it easy to share your Sion with other people. Use the Sono-App to decide on how long you want to share your Sion. After parking, leave your keycard in the car and lock it using your phone. Now your Sion is available for other app users to hit the road. Once somebody sends a request, he can reserve and unlock the car with your permission. When the car is returned, the rental charges are directly transferred to your account.

rideSharing

By using the Sono-App, you can easily offer travelers a ride with your Sion. Just enter the location your ride will be starting at, as well as your destination. Continue by making your ride available to others, via the Sono-App and set an individual price for the trip.

Now, other users can decide if they are interested in your offer and, if they are going your way, send a request. Once you accept that request they will get a notice and you can pick them up. After reaching the destination, you have agreed on, the agreed payment will be transferred directly and automatically to your account. Whether you commute or take a trip to another city: share the ride, share your costs.

powerSharing

Thanks to the bidirectional charging (biSono), you can use the car as an independent power source. With the Sono-App you can share certain amounts of energy with other people. If somebody asks for access to your Sion’s energy, you can grant it, via the app. Just decide on how much power you are willing to pass on and at what price. Other app users will see your offer and the exact location of your car. This technology transforms your car to a mobile power station that will ear you some money.

reSono

How does reSono function?

With the help of our step-by-step manuals, everybody should be able to repair the Sion, single-handed and for free. We will offer the instructions as videos and texts on our website.

If you do not feel like repairing the Sion by yourself, just bring it to the next auto shop. Since we will unveil the complete workshop manual, every mechanic in the world should be able to repair the Sion.

We will not sell expensive repair shop licenses, nor will we develop software that only we can decode and fix. Our workshop manual is freely accessible for everyone on our website. Whether you’re a private person or a car dealer.

This helps to establish a broadly developed service network from the very beginning on – and guarantees you an affordable repair.

We also provide to each component of the vehicle the CAD file for free online, so as to let clients have spare parts produced locally by CNC milling or 3D printer. This also means that companies can manufacture and distribute spare parts for Sion without a license from the Sono Motors GmbH.

This has the result that plenty parts will be manufactured for the Sion and will always be available and the customer will benefit from the low prices of spare parts. The only drawback is that with non-commercial repairs and external produced spare parts, the (partial) warranty expires. But this is also the case with all conventional vehicles. We can not give a guarantee if a part has been replaced by you none professionally.

Generally, a long service life of the vehicle is of high importance for the Sono Motors GmbH, since real sustainability can only be achieved this way.

Where and when can I buy spare parts for the Sion?

Once the vehicle has been produced and delivered, there will be a tab called reSono on our website. Here you can then reorder all parts of the vehicle. For some parts, options are displayed, where you could get the concerned spare part somewhere else.

For example, in the case of conventional screws. This shows you, whether you can buy it simply in your local hardware store. This saves waiting time and costs.

PreOrder

PreOrder

How does the PreOrder work?

First, you will acquire a reservation to purchase the Sion. This comes with a right of withdrawal of two weeks. In a second step, Sono Motors will offer you a contract of sale for the Sion in 2019. This also comes with a right of withdrawal of two weeks. At first, the delivery will occur free of cost to Bremerhaven. For an additional charge, we will deliver the Sion to the location of preference. Reservations are possible worldwide. Test drives will take place at our own discretion.

The price

The price of 16.000 Euro is excluding the battery. From 2019, the battery will be offered for a monthly rent, i.e. financing or leasing, or a one-time-purchase. At current prices and technology, the price for the battery would lie at approximately 4,000 Euro. The reason why we exclude the battery is that prices are constantly falling, and Sono Motors would like to offer her customers the best deal.

This is how the Sion gets to you

1. We will keep you updated through our Social Media Channels and our Newsletter
2. The vehicle development starts with different partners in 2017
3. The vehicle approval takes place in 2018
4. The start of the serial production and the delivery take place in 2019

Can I cancel my contract?

For all crowdfunding-supporters, who reserved their Sion after the 27th of July, 2017, the following is true: After reserving their Sion, participants can cancel their reservation, within a period of two weeks.

For all crowdfunding-supporters, the following is true: After executing the contract for the purchase of the Sion, participants can cancel their and/or withdraw from their contract, within a period of two weeks. These are the legal provisions for withdrawal and/or cancellation in Germany.

What is the guarantee on the Sion?

For product warranty, standard legal provisions in Germany apply. In addition, Sono Motors offers a guarantee for the Sion of probably two years or 100,000 kilometers and a battery guarantee of two years, 100,000 kilometers or 2,000 charge cycles, whichever comes first.

Discounts for early supporters

The first 5.000 reservations represent an important milestone in the history of Sono Motors, which is why we offered a price reduction to these early supporters. We reached this milestone on the 14th of June 2018. As a thank you to all our fans, who did not make it in time, we extend the offered discount until the 30th of June 2018. The chance to reserve a Sion at a reduced price will be gone afterwards.

Crowdinvesting

Crowdinvesting

What is crowdinvesting?

Crowdfunding is a mechanism that enables broad groups of investors to
fund startup companies and small businesses. Investors give money to a
business and receive ownership of a small piece of that business, or alter-
natively a fixed interest rate. If the business succeeds, then the value of the
company increases, and, hence, also the value of a share in that business
– the inverse is also true.

These transactions are closely regulated by the relevant financial authori-
ties of the countries where these financial products are offered.

Why does Sono Motors rely on crowdinvesting?

Through crowdinvesting, Sono Motors allows her supporters to participate
in the success of the business and become a part of the success-story. At
the same time, investors contribute to the financial strength of Sono Motors.
This symbiosis enables us to move ahead, faster and more reliably, with the
normal steps of vehicle development of the Sion.

In cooperation with renowned contract-manufacturers and system suppliers
from Europe, we are better positioned to complete the vehicle development and obtain all approvals from the relevant authorities by mid-2018, and start production and distribution, during the second quarter of 2019.

How does shareholding in Sono Motors work?

Via the crowdinvesting platform Seedrs, the investor-community can acquire shares in Sono Motors GmbH. Altogether, the investor-community acquires 1,65% of the shares of the company, and, in exchange for those shares, invests circa 1,000,000 Euro. If the business succeeds, then the value of the company increases, and, hence, also the value of a share in that business.

In addition, Seedrs offers a regulated, private market for the commercialisation of shares. In this secondary market, participants can trade their shares, at a profit. Hence, investors do not have to rely on future dividend payments, but can profit from capital gains from trading their assets. In the medium term, investors will also profit from dividend payments.

For the registration on Seedrs, participants must show a valid document
and proof of address, i.e. post a picture or scan of these documents on the
platform, during the registration process. Through this slightly complicated registration process, the platform ensures that all participants trade honestly and in their own name. By so doing, the operators protects other participants from wrongful or illicit trading. More details can be found on the Seedrs platform.
